The barrier you need comes down to one thing: what’s behind it, and how fast traffic is moving past it. Spend more than you need and you’ve over-engineered a footpath; spend too little near live traffic and the barrier is decoration. Here’s the simple way to match the job to the kit.
Guiding and marking (low risk, slow or no traffic). For roadside works, utility digs and pedestrian routing where you’re directing people rather than stopping vehicles, the Chapter 8 Barrier is the standard choice, high-visibility, HDPE, quick to interlock and reposition. The Evo Barrier gives you a water-filled option at a similar entry price when you want a bit more presence on the ground.
Defining a perimeter (moderate risk, site separation). Where you need a heavier, more stable line, keeping the public out of a compound, splitting pedestrian and vehicle routes on site, or holding a perimeter that won’t get nudged out of place, the water-filled RB2000 and the heavy-duty Titan Barrier carry more weight and hold a line better than lightweight delineation.
Genuine impact protection (live or fast traffic). When a vehicle could actually leave the carriageway, live highways, fast site entrances, anywhere a strike has real consequences, only a crash-tested barrier will do. The RB22 is crash-tested free-standing to 50mph (80km/h) under BS EN 1317-N1, so it brings a wayward vehicle to a controlled stop rather than simply marking the hazard.
For temporary works on or near UK roads, Chapter 8 of the Traffic Signs Manual is the reference point most projects work to, it’s the recognised standard for how temporary signing and barriers should be set out. For barriers expected to contain or redirect a vehicle, the relevant standard is BS EN 1317, which is what crash ratings like the RB22’s 50mph performance are tested against. On exposed or roadside sites, wind loading also matters lightweight barriers should be correctly ballasted or water-filled to stay stable. Yes. Empty, a water-filled barrier is light and acts only as a visual marker. The protection comes from the ballast weight once it’s filled on site, that mass is what holds the line and, on a crash-tested unit, absorbs and redirects an impact. Treat any unfilled barrier as a marker only.
