Strongboys Information

You can purchase Strongboy prop head wall supports from us and have them delivered straight to your construction site or DIY project (subject to availability). The Strongboy design features a plate locking bar, which locks the bracket to the top of the prop, ensuring it stays level for added security and safety.

Strongboys are primarily used as an extra support for adjustable steel Acrow props. These prop heads have been manufactured to the highest standards and comply with British standards BS4074:1982. These types of prop heads are excellent for supporting walls when removing stonework, brickwork or masonry.

Complete your setup with our alternative supports, including the fixed u-head with spigot – ideal for cradling timber beams in formwork, shoring, and temporary platforms.

Strongboys have been designed to fit on top of any standard acrow, which allows the upper section of a wall or ceiling to be supported during the removal of masonry beneath it. This is to prepare for the installation of lintels, beams, or RSJs. These supports can be used with standard screw props that have a 6-inch by 6-inch head. The strongboy stands out among others because, instead of running this prop head through both wall skins to install it, you can remove mortar from each brick course, and then the front blade can be inserted through the space to provide vertical support.

The strongboy support can take on a maximum load of 340kg on a single-prop head, and anything greater is not advised. The maximum load and installation depths are now stamped on the Strongboy to ensure the user has the necessary information readily available.

To install a Strongboy prop head, first, carefully make holes in the wall using a masonry drill bit. Then, you need to install the support bracket in position, and once done, tighten the screw, but please ensure you do not overtighten it.

Yes, this type of support can be used on either a single- or double-skin wall, but only where each leaf is 112mm in thickness. However, if it is a double skin with a 50mm cavity, please ensure the blade is installed so that it completely supports the second skin.

It is recommended that you install Strongboys no more than 3ft away from each other.

Strongboy wall supports are zinc-plated to increase their longevity and prevent rust and corrosion.

Below are a few pointers and tips that you should know when installing a strongboy support head:

  • The prop should only be placed on a firm, flat, compacted ground that is capable of supporting the load.
  • You should NEVER tighten the collar because this can damage the strongboy prop and also the brickwork it supports.
  • Always make sure that it has been installed correctly to the very top of the acrow prop, and you can test this by pulling the front of the blade down, and if there is no movement, then it has been fitted properly
  • To ensure maximum support, always ensure that it is installed so that the handle or web bracket sits against the face of the supported wall.
  • When propping up a cavity wall, the measurements from the prop to the cavity wall’s centre should be no more than 215 mm. Single skins should not exceed 305mm.
  • When working from height, the distance from the floor should not exceed 3m.
  • Walls that are being supported by a strongboy must also be braced for the forces pushing down on them horizontally. So, it is advised that the prop head wall support should be a maximum of 500mm from the floor.
  • If using acrow props along with strongboys together, they need to be no more than 900mm apart.
  • When creating openings to load-bearing structures that are up to 4m in width, it is recommended that every Strongboy prop be braced both diagonally and horizontally.
  • Regularly check that all supports are not loose.
  • It is recommended to work on one skin at a time when working on both single and double-skinned walls.

Here are a few construction and DIY scenarios that the Strongboy prop head wall supports may be helpful for:

  • Breaking out single or double-skinned walls.
  • Supporting brickwork that has been damaged or is unbalanced.
  • When wall ties require replacing.
  • The installation of concrete lintels and RSJs.
  • When installing new doors and windows.
  • Providing support to damaged window headers.
